We’re getting close to that annual ritual: Spring Cleaning. Maybe you can’t wait to let the sunshine in. Maybe you put off cleaning windows because you dread the task. Good news: there are services to do it for you. But whether you do it yourself or have someone do it for you, there is a right way to clean windows.
Here are the window cleaning instructions we gathered from leading window manufacturers Andersen®, Pella® and Marvin®.
Warnings
- First, all window manufacturers warn us to never use solvents, abrasive solutions, scraping tools (like razor blades) or power washers, as you could damage your windows.
- Also, don’t clean in direct sunlight, as that can cause cleaning residue to dry on the glass. Wait until that part of your house is in shade or clean on an overcast day.
- Always be careful on ladders. Your personal safety is paramount.
How to Clean Your Windows
- Wipe loose dirt from the glass with a soft, dry cloth.
- Clean the glass with warm soapy water, a manufacturer approved cleaning solutionor simple vinegar and water. Wipe with a soft cloth in a circular motion, beginning at the top of the window.
- Immediately remove the cleaning solution with a squeegee or a clean, lint-free cloth. If you use a squeegee, use a cloth to wipe it dry after each swipe and make sure the metal parts don’t touch the glass.
- Clean the interior and exterior frame surfaces with warm, soapy water; rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove debris from the windowsill.
Weep Holes
Please note that window and door gaskets, sealants and frames are susceptible to deterioration if cleaning solutions are not rinsed and dried immediately after cleaning.
You may notice water gathering in the sill and track. That’s normal. If your windows have “weep holes,” the water will drain outside through them. If dirt or debris are clogging the weep holes, you’ll want to clean the opening using a small, soft brush. Weep holes may be located both inside and outside the window in the bottom of the frame.
If there are scratches on your frames, sashes or sills, touch up paint is usually available from the manufacturer.
All manufacturers agree that the best way to care for your windows is to clean them often, using the methods described above.
