Does Your Roof Need Rain Gutters?

Does Your Roof Need Rain Gutters?

If you don’t have rain gutters already but are considering putting on a new roof, you may wonder if now’s a good time to add them. You would be right. Every roof needs a good gutter system to properly handle water run-off and protect the structure. Here are some of the big reasons why your roof needs rain gutters.

The Function of Gutters

First off, what purpose do gutters serve for your home and surrounding property? Gutters are installed underneath the edge of the roof to collect rainwater as it pours down the roof’s surface. The gutters will then direct that water to the edge of the roof, down into vertical sectionals known as downspouts. Those downspouts then dispense the water into drainage systems that divert the water away from your foundation.

Without gutters, rain water would stream off your roof and drop directly down your siding and onto the ground, leading to erosion, foundation damage, basement flooding, and damage to vegetation.

The Importance of Gutters

There are many reasons why every home should have a gutter system.

  • Gutters protect your home from water damage: Without gutters in place, rainwater can collect on and in your roof, resulting in rot, deterioration, and mold. This accumulation can also weaken your shingles, fascia and soffit.
  • Gutters protect your windows: Without gutters, water will stream off your roof and down your windows, which leads to condensation and damage to the sill and interior walls. Mold, mildew and grime can also develop.
  • Gutters protect your foundation: Without gutters, rainwater can pool against your home’s foundation, causing erosion and weakening the integrity of the structure. Water can also seep into your basement through cracks in the foundation and lead to flooding.
  • Gutters protect soil and vegetation: If rain water is left to pour off unchecked down to the ground, this will damage bushes, flowers and plants directly underneath the flow of water. Also, that pounding water will erode the soil around your home, leading to foundation issues.

There’s little doubt as to the benefits of gutters, but they do have to be maintained in order to be effective. Maintenance includes periodic inspections, clearing clogs such as leaves and other debris, and making sure the pitch is correct. Keep in mind that high winds and bad storms can cause misalignments of your gutter system, weakening it over time. It’s wise to have an experienced roofing contractor not only install the gutter system but maintain it annually.
