Don’t walk over any standing water, as there could be nearby downed power lines that can still be energized and dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away and alert the police and utility company as soon as possible.
Also, don’t check for storm damage after dark, as it can also be dangerous. But if this isn’t an option, make sure to carry a flashlight instead of a candle or other open flame. This is to reduce the risk of a fire or a leaked explosion from a nearby damaged gas line. As you walk around your home for storm damage, there are other physical hazards to look out for. This includes damaged roofing materials, broken windows, and other debris. Even standing water in your basement or home interior can also endanger your safety!
