Window screens help keep pests out during summer, but in winter, they can damage your windows. During winter, ice or snow may get trapped between the screen and your windows, causing moisture damage. That’s why you should remove screens before the start of winter.
Aside from preventing window damage, there are other reasons why window screens need to be removed during winter. Allstar Construction of Fargo, one of your trusted window and door companies, lists them here.
Improve Natural Lighting and Take Advantage of Passive Heating
Removing the window screens will allow sunlight and heat to enter your home, brightening the mood inside and creating more warmth. In general, the area near windows with no window screens are roughly eight degrees warmer on a sunny day in winter.
Window Cleaning Tips
Keep in mind you won’t be able to take full advantage of natural sunlight if the glass window panes are grimy and covered with dirt. If your glass panes need a bit of maintenance here’s a quick cleaning tip: Use distilled water to make a mild cleaning solution. This will prevent white streaks—which are formed from trace minerals present in tap water—from forming on the window panes.
Important note: While cleaning the windows, keep an eye out for cracks on the window frame. Gaps in the frame or cracks on the glass panes can allow heat to escape from your home. If you notice any signs of window damage, have a professional contractor conduct window repair as soon as possible.
Cleaning Window Screens
Don’t forget to clean the window screens before storing them in the garage or attic. Use a vacuum to remove spider webs, dust, pollen, and dirt on the window screen, and wash it using a sponge soaked in soapy water. If you’re using a hose, make sure to use a low-pressure setting.
