The Hidden Damage of Hail on Your Roof

The Hidden Damage of Hail on Your Roof

Your roof is the great protector of the rest of your home. However, it’s not impervious to impact damage from hail storms. The thing is, hail damage isn’t always obvious, such as a large dent or a crack in your shingles. It can manifest itself as split shingles only visible on the backside, or the erosion of sealant.

As a homeowner, it’s important to know what to look for after a hail storm. If you see something suspicious, call your trusted residential contractors to fix the issue. Remember: just because you can’t see the damage doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fixed promptly.

Top Signs of Hidden Issues

Some of the most common types of hidden issues caused by hail include:

  1. Loss of Granules: Your shingles are covered in tiny granules that not only provide color for your roof, they protect it from the elements and prevent fires. Granules will wear away and slough off over time as a result of friction and impact of hail. This loss of granules will lower your roof’s ability to protect your home as the years wear on.
  2. Broken Fiberglass: Fiberglass provides an extra layer of insulation for your home, and it’s often damaged by hail impacts. Some hail can be the size of baseballs, and when those balls hit your roof at 75 miles per hour, your insulation can take a big hit. When your insulation is no longer effective, your energy bills will increase due to the fact that your home is no longer able to retain its seal.
  3. Sealant Erosion: Roof shingles are secured by nails, to be sure, but they’re also secured by sealant. Freezing hail can break and erode the sealant on your shingles, resulting in direct exposure to the elements. If your shingles aren’t supported by sealants, they can fall off your roof.
  4. Dark Spots: You may notice these spots where hail or debris have knocked the granules loose, exposing the dark tar paper underneath.
  5. Dark Lines or Cracks: These may occur along the width of the shingle, a couple of inches underneath the bottom of the shingle that lies above. This signals that the shingle had been lifted up by the wind and flapped about, resulting in a crease.
  6. Curled Shingles: They may have either curled up around the edges or curled up in the center to make an arch with exposed space under the shingle.
