Is it Worth it to Renovate my Pole Barn?

PAID Pole Barn scaled

Post frame buildings – pole barns – are a staple on rural properties. Whether they’re used for work, storage, livestock, or recreation, it’s hard to imagine your farm without a pole barn.

If your pole barn is 50 years old or older, however, it likely needs some major maintenance. If the siding is rusting, the roof is leaking, the poles are rotting, the doors don’t slide with ease, or you’ve suffered storm damage, don’t despair – you’re not alone. Structures built back then didn’t have today’s advanced materials and finishes.

What Are Your Options?

You can tear it down and rebuild with more durable materials. You may also be able to renovate and get all the benefits you’re looking for.

Which Makes More Sense – Rebuilding or Renovating?

As with so many things in life, it depends…

It depends on what you have, what you want, and how much you’ve budgeted.

If your posts have rotted, the trusses are compromised or the building has moved off its foundation, you may be better off getting rid of the old structure and starting fresh.  And if you want to make wholesale changes to the building – convert a pole barn to a house, for example – the renovation may not make economic sense. In those cases, you may be better starting over with a completely new, purpose-built structure. You’ll want to consult an architect on projects of that scale.

If your post frame building has “good bones” you can make a number of practical improvements that are more cost-effective than putting up a new building. Possible improvements include:

  • Re-skin and re-roof – you’ll be amazed at the transformation
  • Insulate the roof and walls
  • Replace ridge lights, windows and doors
  • Change a sliding door to an overhead (garage) door
